Hello John,

On August 16, 2020, the largest civil rights protest in the history of Belarus occurred on the streets of Minsk in the aftermath of the Belarusian Presidential election that took place a week prior.

On that day, more than 220,000 people decided to express their massive dissatisfaction with the current state of affairs, particularly with regard to election fraud, state violence, human rights abuses, and torture.

In the following weeks, more than 400 thousand people joined the peaceful freedom movement in Minsk, and over one million people participated in the protests across the whole country.

For the first time in history, the people of Belarus dared to say "no" to the regime and stand up for their rights and freedoms.

Students For Liberty's CEO, Dr. Wolf von Laer, interviewed Piotr Markielau, our leader and civil rights activist from Belarus, who was previously abused by the police. In this interview, Piotr talks about the current situation in Belarus, his reaction to the mass protests against the government, and what we can do to help the freedom movement thrive there.
