John,

The 4th of July is supposed to be a celebration of the idea of America, where people are free, with unalienable rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Our government can help us meet these lofty ideals. And it can stand in the way.

Donald Trump will be celebrating the 4th of July with a parade in Washington D.C. featuring military tanks and special tickets to the event for big donors to the Republican Party.

Kids who were brought here by parents seeking a better life for their families and fleeing violence and poverty will be spending the day separated from each other, in camps with appalling and inhumane conditions.

We are not a free nation while families seeking the idea of America are separated and children are in cages.

We all can agree there is much work to do to make sure our government reflects our values.

So on this 4th of July, reflect. Have fun. Be safe. And come back ready to kick some ass, for America.
