Team,

On this Labor Day, I'm thinking of all workers in America, especially who have been on the frontline of this pandemic — healthcare workers, mail carriers, service workers, grocery store clerks, construction workers, and far too many more to name.

And to organized labor and unions who have fought for better wages, better benefits, weekends, holidays like this one, safer working conditions — thank you.

We're taking the day to recognize those workers in thanks and recognition. As we do, let's remember that Texas has placed severe restrictions on the organized labor movement, leading to staggering inequality. This inequality has weakened our economy and left us vulnerable to the kind of recession we've seen amid this pandemic. Decades of attacks on union organizing have contributed to today's mass unemployment, an eviction crisis, and continuing runaway income inequality.

With too many unable to see a doctor, afford rent, or meet their most basic needs, there is so much work to do.

The explosion in Wall Street profits since the Reagan era hasn't resulted in higher wages, safer working conditions, and better benefits for most Americans. And because the Texas legislature, as beholden to big money as it is, actively works to prevent union and labor organizing in our state — fewer workers are joining a union today.

I believe that we should make it easier to join a union — not harder — and that working people should be able to bargain for better wages and benefits for themselves and their families, and that in addition to better wages, every Texan is entitled to paid sick leave and childcare.

As we rapidly accelerate to reduce carbon pollution and create jobs under a Green New Deal, by investing in infrastructure projects, wind and solar energy, and more efficient buildings and transportation systems, we'll be creating millions of new, good-paying, union jobs.

Good pay, good benefits, and safe working conditions — let's join with organized labor to ensure that we're all afforded the basic dignity we deserve — the key to rebuilding our middle class and a new era of prosperity for Texas and for this country.

Happy Labor Day!

In solidarity,

Julie
