John,

I gotta get right into it today and state the obvious here: Why on earth are we picking a trade war with Canada?

Here in Vermont, our ties to Canada are deeply woven into our communities. We have family across the border. Friends across the border. Businesses and customers who depend on one another every single day.

And Vermonters are pissed about what’s happening. Frankly, a lot of us are deeply hurt by it too.

The Trump administration has taken one of our closest friendships in the world and turned it into a petty, chaotic trade fight that could make life more expensive for people here at home.

If you’re as fed up with this as I am, will you chip in $10, $25, or whatever you can today to help me keep fighting for Vermont in Congress? [[link removed]]

Seriously, look at where we are.

We are slapping tariffs on Canadian hockey sticks, for crying out loud , dragging French-language protections into trade negotiations, and changing the terms of deals at the last minute.

And guess who gets caught in the middle of all this nonsense? Vermonters .

About a quarter of Vermont’s electricity comes from Hydro-Québec. In parts of our state, our energy ties to Canada run even deeper.

Then there’s housing.

We are already desperately trying to build our way out of a housing crisis, and Vermont relies heavily on Canadian lumber and wood products. If Trump starts driving up the price of the materials we need to frame homes, suddenly it gets even MORE expensive to build the housing Vermonters desperately need.

And for what?

What exactly are Vermont families supposed to gain from making electricity, building materials, and everyday goods more expensive while torching a relationship with our closest neighbor?

If you’re ready to help me fight back against this reckless trade war and make damn sure Vermonters aren’t left paying the price for Trump’s chaos, will you chip in $5, $10, or whatever you can right now? [[link removed]]

There are ways to use strategic tariffs to protect American workers and industries. But this administration’s whiplash approach is creating uncertainty, raising costs, and damaging relationships that go back generations.

And Canada is going to respond. Of course they are. Who wouldn’t?

That slapback could land especially hard here in Vermont because our communities and economies are so closely connected.

We should be strengthening those relationships. We should be lowering costs. We should be helping Vermonters build homes and businesses and lives they can afford.

I’m going to keep fighting like hell for that. And I’m going to keep saying how ridiculous this is until the madness ends
