this week's woke edition

Welcome to another edition of FT Now! We hope you’re enjoying the long holiday weekend! Because of that, we’ll keep things brief. At least four Democrat governors are being asked to answer questions about COVID-related nursing home deaths that happened in their states (finally). The two Democrats running for governor in New Hampshire made a disturbing pledge this week. And just in case you were wondering, not even two of our country’s most iconic landmarks are safe from the left’s latest brand of wokeness. Read below for more!

Democratic Governors Under Scrutiny For Thousands of Nursing Home Deaths On Their Watch
What Happened:
The DOJ announced it is requesting data from Democrat Govs. Andrew Cuomo, Phil Murphy, Gretchen Whitmer, and Tom Wolf regarding policies and actions "which may have resulted in the deaths of thousands of elderly nursing home residents."
Why You Should Care:
COVID-19 has hit the elderly - particularly those in nursing homes - extra hard. These four governors, specifically, bucked CDC guidelines on nursing homes by forcing facilities to readmit patients. In other words, while they were putting the most vulnerable at risk, they were simultaneously preaching COVID-19 restrictions on the rest of us.
What Happens Next:
The request from the DOJ signals an official probe may be on the horizon. One can only hope.

Former NH Senator and Prosecutor in Cop Killer Case: Feltes-Volinsky Pledge to Commute Sentence "Extremely Disturbing"
What Happened:
Former Senator Kelly Ayotte had some harsh words for the two Democrats running for governor in New Hampshire. Both Andru Volinsky and Dan Feltes have pledged to commute the sentence of convicted police killer Michael Addison. Yes, you read that right.
Why You Should Care:
Addison was convicted of shooting a 35-year-old Manchester police officer in cold blood. Gov. Chris Sununu said he was "shocked" by the pledge. We’re guessing most New Hampshire residents would be too.
What Happens Next:
The Democratic gubernatorial primary is next week, which means one of these men will be on the ballot in November.

D.C. Committee Targets Washington Monument, Jefferson Memorial For Changes
What Happened:
A committee put together this summer by Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser released a report this week with some recommendations for how the city should deal with...certain landmarks.
Why You Should Care:
According to the report, the committee wants to "remove, relocate, or contextualize" various sites around the city - including the Washington Monument and Jefferson Memorial. Not even two of our greatest Founding Fathers are safe from the woke left!
What Happens Next:
Mayor Bowser doesn’t have the authority to change anything that sits on federal land. Still, the targeting of two of our nation’s most iconic monuments has us shaking our heads.
