Apparently we are still talking about this. 😂

Nearly two months ago, an AI-generated video of me made the rounds. And for reasons I cannot fully explain, some corners of Vermont’s right-wing media ecosystem have decided to keep dusting this thing off and writing about it.

Honestly, if the big story about me is still a fake AI video from two months ago, I guess we’re doing pretty well!

But since they keep bringing it up, here’s what I actually think.

People are allowed to make fun of me! Seriously.

Parody me. Criticize me. Make a ridiculous video. Disagree with me loudly. I’m a member of Congress. Free speech protects your right to say things I love, things I hate, and things I think are completely absurd.

I would never want it any other way. But I ALSO think we can be normal adults about artificial intelligence.

We now have technology that can recreate someone’s face, clone their voice, and make a video that looks and sounds like a real person saying something they never said. That’s pretty remarkable technology. But it also raises some pretty obvious questions when we start using it in elections.

Voters should be able to know whether the candidate they’re watching actually said the thing coming out of their mouth.

And yes, we can protect that principle while protecting satire, parody, criticism, and free expression . Vermont’s own law regulating deceptive synthetic media specifically protects satire and parody.

So I promise, nobody needs to panic. I am not coming for your memes. 😂

I’m saying we should have sane rules for incredibly powerful technology, protect people’s right to speak freely, and make sure voters aren’t deliberately tricked about what is real and what is not.

I don’t know, but that seems pretty reasonable to me.

And while the other side keeps trying to turn recycled internet nonsense into a story, we’re going to keep building the kind of grassroots campaign that lets me spend my time fighting for healthcare, housing, working families, and our democracy.
