Silicon Valley DSA NewsletterSilicon Valley DSA Newsletter[[PERMALINK_FULL_LINK]]Silicon Valley DSA. Branches: Lower Peninsula, San Jose [[link removed]]Hi John!

Our communities are in crisis. Between the wildfires that have displaced 119,000 residents within our region, COVID-19, and the persistent forces of racism and police brutality, your work to bring mutual aid and to disrupt systems that perpetuate oppression and climate change is needed now more than ever.

In light of the wildfires around the Bay Area, we’ve partnered with South Bay Mutual Aid to purchase and distribute over 7,300 KN95 masks to protect folks against low air quality as well as COVID-19. To support this work and more, donate to our Mutual Aid Fund [[link removed]]! For distribution updates follow SBMA [[link removed]].

To get more involved, please join our mutual aid channel (#covid-mutual-aid) on Slack. To join our Slack, please reply to this email.

UPDATES
SOCIALISTS AT THE BALLOT BOX
Our member recently voted to endorse Tiffany Vuong for Milpitas City Council and Basil Saleh for School Board (Campbell Union HSD).

Tiffany Vuong [[link removed]]We need to address income inequality and the racial disparities in access to all aspects of society. With more pro-working class council members, we could finally pass rent control and just cause evictions.
Tiffany Vuong (Source [[link removed]])

Basil Saleh [[link removed]]I want to do all that I can to stop the district from making a land swap and becoming a commercial landlord… public land should only go to public goods, one of the last developable plots of centrally located land on our district office property should include housing for teachers and/or homeless families.
Basil Saleh (Source [[link removed]])

Join us in volunteering for Tiffany and for Basil! And of course, our other endorsed candidates need your support as well:

* Lissette Espinoza-Garnica for Redwood City City Council D3 [[link removed]]
* John Lashlee for Mountain View City Council [[link removed]]
* Alex Lee for Assembly [[link removed]]
* Jake Tonkel for San Jose City Council D6 [[link removed]]

The next Electoral WG meeting [[link removed]] is on Tuesday Sept 8. Find us in #wg-electoral on Slack!

RESCINDING ENDORSEMENT OF SHAHID BUTTAR
At our most recent general meeting on 8/16, SV DSA voted to rescind our endorsement of Shahid Buttar, a candidate for US House of Representatives running against Nancy Pelosi. Please read our statement [[link removed]].

GOOD NEWS IN MOUNTAIN VIEW!
The Mountain View “Sneaky Repeal” has been withdrawn. This is a huge win for advocates for housing justice and for renters. SV DSA helped hand out 10,000 flyers in 2018 to help inform our community about this measure. Thank you to everyone that was a part of these efforts!

The fight to protect renters is not over. City Council has sided with landlords on demolitions of rent-controlled units, by appointing rent control opponents to the Rental Housing Committee, and by blocking rent control on mobile homes. Organize with #caucus-mountain-view on Slack and support our endorsed candidate, John Lashlee!
