GREETINGS OF PEACE
September 2nd, 2019

** MCN's Summer Rundown
------------------------------------------------------------

What an end to the summer! MCN has been busy getting ready for the upcoming school year while completing a summer filled with civic activities, diversity education, youth leadership development programs and a once in a lifetime experience for youth in our interfaith generation peace fellowship program. We planned an extraordinary event with the NYC Office of Appointments on how to become an appointed judge in New York City, with our partners at the Muslim Bar Association of NY. We presented two diversity education presentations for NYC employees at the Office of Emergency Management and one for the Center for New York City Neighborhoods. These training modules are essential tools to combat discrimination and biases against the Muslim community of our city. We conducted two Muslim youth summits, which are one-day workshops for Muslim youth to learn about leadership and develop social justice organizing skills. We hosted a self-defense workshop in the Bronx, thanks kindly to our funder the
Brooklyn Community Foundation. We also started our inaugural series of Muslim Stakeholder Roundtable gatherings with other Muslim/Muslim serving community-based organizations in an effort to coordinate our efforts to address the issues facing the Muslim community. Finally, we organized a civic action day around migrant rights and immigration, issues that are deeply impacting the Muslim community.

Our Generation Peace Fellows completed their interfaith trip to the Rose Castle Foundation in Cumbria, the United Kingdom on August 4th. The trip brought together youth from the Muslim and Christian faith backgrounds and delved into peacebuilding and conflict resolution skill-building. Least to say, the experience was transformative for all the participants. MCN is truly proud to support the next generation of peacebuilders and civic leaders in our community! We are so grateful to the All Angels Church for being our program partner and sponsor for this youth-trip.

** Muslim Youth Leadership Summit
------------------------------------------------------------
July 11th and August 22nd, 2019

Thanks to the Islamic Center of Passaic New Jersey and to Hillside Islamic Center for inviting us to organize Muslim Youth Leadership Summits for their summer youth programs. We hosted more than 100 students combined and designed workshops and activities that helped build essential leadership skills. Thank you to the NYC Office of Immigrant Affairs, the NYC Commission on Human Rights, the Yemeni American Merchants Association, and Chhaya Community Development Corporation for your presentations and partnership with us.

** Emerging Peacemakers Program at Rose Castle
------------------------------------------------------------
July 27th - August 4th

Our Generation Peace Fellows completed their weeklong program at the Rose Castle Foundation in partnership with their interfaith partners at All Angels Church. The weeklong program delved into how youth can learn across differences and build peaceful societies. Stay tuned for student feedback posts because this was a trip that was truly one of a kind and we're proud to be able to partner with this program for Muslim youth in our city!
Special thanks to our chaperones Dr. Debbie Almontaser, Dr. Sarah Sayeed, and our very own Kujegi Camara!

** Inaugural Muslim Stakeholders Roundtable Series
------------------------------------------------------------
August 20th, 2019
MCN held the first Muslim Stakeholders Roundtable Series gathering this summer with over a dozen Muslim/Muslim serving community-based organizations. The purpose of the gathering is to help strengthen the direct service and advocacy organizations working to support the Muslim community in our city, and thereby, activating our "network". Together, we outlined three of the most important issues impacting our community today:
Immigration
Youth Engagement
Gender Equity
We look forward to working with our partners to ensure that our efforts are coordinated and we leverage each other's strengths to ensure a coordinated effort to address these challenges facing our community. In the coming months, we will be establishing a community calendar that will highlight all the events being organized by the community. Thank you to everyone who participated and look out for our next meeting in early November!

** Civic Action Day
------------------------------------------------------------
August 29th
In light of all the policies taken by the federal administration on immigrant communities, MCN rallied community members for a civic action day. One of many to come, this action day was dedicated to ensuring that our communities have an opportunity to respond to the ICE raids, public charge rule, and migrant crisis at the border. Together, we wrote letters to key legislators, pressuring them to heed to citizen demands to stop funding ICE and rolling back the public charge rule. We were joined by spoken word artists and youth activists: Daad Sharfi; Samira Sadeque, Faatiha Aayat, and Alhassan Umar!
