** What would it take to give everyone a decent bus service?

Buses are an essential public service. Every day, buses take millions to school, training, work, hospital appointments and high streets.
But not every community has enough bus stops, or enough buses.
What would it take to give everyone a decent bus service? That's the question we set out to answer with our latest research. We worked with transport planning software provider Podaris to develop an interactive bus mapping tool, which maps service levels across England and Wales.
First, we defined two levels of service to work towards – a minimum baseline that we believe everyone should have access to, and an ambition benchmark that local authorities can strive to get to in the future.
Next, we mapped existing provision of bus stops and bus services, to identify places that fall below these standards.
We found that:
* 15% of people live in areas that fail to meet our 'minimum baseline' for a usable bus service
* 42% of people live in places that don't meet our 'ambition benchmark'.
We also worked out how much it might cost to plug these gaps in provision. We estimate it would take an additional £300 million a year to ensure every community meets a minimum standard, while £1 billion a year – effectively doubling current levels of bus investment – would bring all areas up to a best-practice level of service.
While £1 billion might seem like a lot of money, it is relatively modest compared to investment in other essential public services. For example, it represents just 0.15% of the annual NHS budget.
We are campaigning for additional investment in bus provision. Buses have so many benefits: boosting local economies, helping us access work and education, improving our health and so much more. But in the meantime, we hope our new interactive bus mapping tool - which is freely available to all - will be used to target existing funding at the places most in need.
