Black Lives Matter: Before you read the message below, we first want to acknowledge that our nation is reeling from yet another shooting of a Black person at the hands of police. What happened to Jacob Blake, Rayshard Brooks, George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and so many other Black victims of police violence is in no way an isolated incident, and it's more important than ever that we all work to dismantle pervasive, systemic racism in the United States.

Today is not just another day.

August 28 is an important day in modern American history, and we want to call it to your attention.

It's the anniversary of Emmett Till's murder (1955), Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech (1965), Hurricane Katrina's devastation (2005), and Barack
Obama's acceptance of the Democratic nomination (2008).

Its significance is precisely why the Young, Black & Giving Back Institute chose this date to host Give 8/28 Day - a day of fundraising during Black Philanthropy Month that's dedicated solely to supporting Black-led, Black-benefiting organizations.

Give 8/28 Day has experienced incredible growth in just a few short years, and we think it should become as well known as Giving Tuesday for white donors.

It's not there yet, and the progressive community and non-profit sector are still falling short when it comes to investing in Black organizations. As a non-profit leader and women's rights advocate, I want to be part of the solution and realize that I have an essential role to play in disrupting the status quo and helping to
lift up our brothers and sisters doing amazing work.

That's why the National Partnership is proud to be an official sponsor of Give 8/28 Day, and it's why we're hosting our first (pandemic required) "Zoom-a-thon" fundraising video.

More than 450 organizations stand to benefit from this dedicated day of giving, though our sponsorship gift is specifically supporting a group of 20 small, Black-led organizations that work on Black maternal health and reproductive justice - two issues central to the National Partnership's mission.

We already work closely with some of these great organizations, like the Black Mamas Matter Alliance and Mamatoto Village, but each and every one of them deserve to be known, recognized and supported!

In the "Zoom-a-thon," you'll get to meet Ebonie Johnson Cooper, founder of the Young, Black & Giving Back Institute, who shares her inspirational story and provides helpful context around this important event. You'll also be treated to a special, moving musical performance at the end.
