As America marked its 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, it is a good time to reflect on the freedom of this great nation as a constitutional republic.
President Trump’s America 250 address on July 4th solidified that message. Even after storms delayed the celebration on the National Mall, the crowd returned because America is the nation where the show must go on. The President connected the Declaration, the Constitution, the flags that defined our history, the heroes who defeated fascism and communism, and the future of American greatness through the Artemis astronauts and the next frontier of space.
He called America the “home of freedom” and the “land of liberty.” He described the moment as “freedom’s triumph over tyranny.” And he made the contrast clear: “America will never be a communist country.” He also said the communist system is “the opposite of the American system.”
So how many communist countries are democracies?
The answer is simple: none.Connecticut and the Himes Problem
Freedom matters directly in Connecticut’s 4th District.
Congressman Jim Himes has tried to position himself as a moderate, and he even joined the House vote denouncing the horrors of socialism. That resolution passed 285-98 and stated that socialist ideology has repeatedly collapsed into communist regimes, totalitarian rule, and brutal dictatorships.
But one symbolic vote is not enough - It was probably a Hall Pass.
The real question is whether Jim Himes will stand up to the radical left inside his own party as it elevates candidates who openly embrace democratic socialism, public ownership, and Marxist language. Zohran Mamdani, for example, calls himself a democratic socialist and has used the phrase “seizing the means of production.”
Connecticut does not need a congressman who triangulates after the danger becomes politically obvious. Connecticut needs a congressman who will say clearly, consistently, and without apology that America’s future is freedom, capitalism, constitutional rights, and opportunity.
The First Step - Exercise Freedom at the Primary
The first step is to vote in the Republican Primary on August 11, with early voting from August 3-9.
Primaries are often low turnout, but this year they matter more than ever. If we want to stop the spread of socialism, defeat the radical left, and send a pro-freedom voice to Congress, we cannot wait until November. The work begins now for real momentum in November.

The History Is Clear
Every communist one-party state promises equality. In practice, it produces dictatorship. China, Cuba, Vietnam, Laos, and North Korea are all rated “Not Free” by Freedom House. China is controlled by the Chinese Communist Party, with no meaningful national elections and no real political opposition. Cuba is a one-party communist state that outlaws political pluralism, bans independent media, suppresses dissent, and restricts basic civil liberties. North Korea remains one of the least free nations on earth.
Communism began in the Soviet Union with Lenin and was followed by Stalin, whose regime starved, imprisoned, and executed millions. When the Soviet Union collapsed, the nations of Eastern Europe that had lived under communist rule threw it off as soon as they had the chance. That tells us something important: people who actually lived under communism rarely vote to keep it.
Russia today is not a communist state, but it is a warning about what happens when power is centralized and opposition is crushed. Vladimir Putin’s Russia is rated “Not Free,” with manipulated elections, controlled media, subservient courts, and suppression of genuine opposition.
China offers another lesson. The Chinese Communist Party controls politics, speech, religion, media, universities, and civil society. Cuba offers the same lesson. After Fidel Castro’s revolution, Cuba became a one-party dictatorship. Many Cubans fled to the United States, where they built vibrant communities and succeeded under freedom, not communism.
Nicaragua is another warning. Daniel Ortega and the Sandinistas came to power promising liberation. Today, Nicaragua is rated “Not Free,” with power consolidated under Ortega and his wife, opposition voices arrested or exiled, citizenship stripped from dissidents, and the rule of law collapsed.
All of these systems follow the same pattern. There are no real elections. There is no free press. There is no independent judiciary. Once the ruling party takes power, it does not leave voluntarily. Society divides into two classes: the political elite who live well, and everyone else who is told to sacrifice.
Communism Creates Inequality
The economic argument for communism is just as false. In 2024, World Bank data showed U.S. GDP per capita at roughly $84,534, compared with about $13,303 in China and $14,889 in Russia.
Nor does communism protect women or vulnerable communities. In Russia, some domestic violence offenses were decriminalized in 2017. Russia’s Supreme Court also labeled the “international LGBT movement” extremist in 2023, putting LGBT advocacy at risk of criminal prosecution.
That is the truth the far left does not want to discuss. Communism does not create equality. It concentrates power. It does not liberate workers. It makes them dependent on the state. It does not protect minorities. It crushes dissent. It does not expand democracy. It ends democracy.
President Trump’s America 250 speech reminded us that the American story is not finished. From the Declaration of Independence to the Constitution, from Yorktown to Normandy, from the Cold War to the moon and Mars, America has always moved forward when it trusted freedom over tyranny.
Communism is not a harmless slogan. It is not a fashionable college theory. Wherever it has taken power, it has ended real elections, crushed dissent, weakened families, and made ordinary people poorer while political elites live above the rules.
America is the greatest experiment in liberty the world has ever known. We should not apologize for that. We should defend it.
That is why we need leaders who will stand for constitutional democracy, capitalism, faith, family, free speech, and the American promise.
That is why I am running for Congress.
