One year ago, Donald Trump signed his Big Ugly Bill into law.

There is nothing beautiful about what this law is doing to American families. The Big Ugly Bill gutted our federal health programs, stripping away $1 TRILLION from the very systems meant to protect us. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office projected that these historic cuts would leave over 10 million Americans completely uninsured.

Before I was elected to Congress, I served my community as a public health nurse. In the clinic, you don't look at health care as a political talking point or a line item on a budget — you see it for what it truly is: a matter of life and death.

I've looked into the eyes of mothers wondering if they can afford prenatal care, seniors worried about their Medicare premiums, and families living paycheck-to-paycheck who are now just one emergency away from financial ruin.
