The results are in! We're thrilled to announce that the winner of the 2020 Jan Allen Courage Award is Rep. Sydney Batch! 

Sydney has been a model of courage since she decided to run for office in 2018. Not only did she face a difficult race in a highly competitive district, but she was also diagnosed with breast cancer in the middle of her campaign. Sydney's bravery in the face of these challenges led her to victory in November 2018, helping to break the years-long Republican supermajority that was harming so many North Carolinian women and families.

The challenges didn't stop once Sydney was elected. To ensure Democrats had the votes to uphold Governor Cooper's vetoes of more harmful, regressive bills in 2019, Sydney returned to the House floor while still recovering from her mastectomy. While most in her place would be recuperating at home, she bravely showed up when it mattered most, and by doing so helped protect the rights of millions.

We're looking forward to honoring Sydney at Lead with Lillian on September 20, when Lillian's List co-founder Laura Edwards will formally present her with the 2020 Jan Allen Courage Award.
