Maggie Toulouse Oliver, NM Secretary of State

Friends,

It's no secret that we've been at a political divide in our country, even before COVID-19 struck. People are feeling more engaged, more enraged, and more passionate about politics and our government. That's why it's so important that every single voter's voice is heard during this major election year.

At the same time, the impacts of the coronavirus pandemic raise unprecedented challenges for our elections. Due to COVID-19, many polling locations have had to close down or limit hours, making it more difficult for those with lack of transportation or inflexible schedules to make it to the booths. Public health and safety also pose a risk of gathering in long lines in-person.

With the pandemic happening and voter suppression occurring, voter turnout rates are at risk. The virus is turning people away from the polls, while the Trump Administration is trying to scare people away from mail-in voting, leaving many voters struggling with the decision to vote at all. A poll from earlier this year showed a decline in new voter registration in New Mexico compared to the 2016 election. But high voter turnout is absolutely critical this year.

While things seem to be looking back up given the record-breaking voter turnout we had in New Mexico during the primary election, there are only a few months left to make sure that all eligible voters are registered and that every voter feels comfortable casting their ballots in November.

My fight to ensure clean elections and fair voting as Secretary of State doesn’t stop with the obstacles presented by this pandemic. In fact, this is such a critical election year, that it’s more essential than ever that every New Mexican has the opportunity to safely cast a ballot.

It’s more urgent than ever that we reassure voter confidence in our electoral process and have a high voter turnout this year. We cannot lose faith in our democracy. Rush a contribution to help the fight to turn out more voters in New Mexico >>
