Trust is at the heart of American politics

Dear Friend,

Trust is at the heart of American politics. There is nothing more important—and, ironically, nothing more frequently violated—than voters feeling like their elected officials have their backs and care enough to listen, show up, and fight for them and their families.

Sadly, too many of the people who currently claim to represent us in government have utterly failed to live up to this basic standard. And, as a result, trust between the people and candidates for office, as well as government itself, has dangerously eroded.

This is on my mind every day as I talk to voters throughout my district and even as I talk to the donors that we rely on to power our campaign and reach everyone in every corner of the district. How do I not only build trust between skeptical voters but also try to restore trust and faith in the power of government to actually make peoples’ lives better?

There are certain sacrifices I, and other like-minded candidates, must make to reach this goal. I will do what it takes to win, but I will not make misleading or underhanded attacks on my opponent, or the people of my district who happen to support him. I will not take hundreds of thousands of dollars in corporate PAC money that otherwise may be sitting on the table for me, if only I would speak favorably about each interest group’s agenda.

And I won’t run a closed-door campaign that only speaks to those donors who can cut max out checks. Big donors and people with means are not evil; they often are sincerely concerned individuals who want to help make policy changes the best way they can. But they also should not make up the centerpiece, or even the bulk, of a candidate’s fundraising strategy.

This is why voters can believe me when I say that I intend to campaign differently, honestly, and without falling into the trap that so many other candidates—Democrat and Republican—do by accepting shady contributions from corporate PACs or dark money groups. And when I say something about politics, or about policy and issues, I mean it and voters can trust that. Because who really has the time to play games when the country is at such a low point? People are suffering, and so many of our neighbors and our friends and family need leaders to step up and focus on doing what matters right now, urgently.

I’m in this fight for the right reasons - for the people of Missouri who have been ignored and undermined for decades. We must do things differently to save our democracy, and that starts with running a different, honest campaign. That’s my commitment to you - I’ll always be in this for the right reasons.

Can you donate to our campaign today and stand up the monied interests flooding our state? We can’t do this without you.
