Hollywood Apocalypse

What to Know: One newspaper calls it the “Hollywood Apocalypse”—people with the means to do so are fleeing the Los Angeles area because of liberal mismanagement.

The TPPF Take: People leave California because of bad policies; they come to Texas for good ones.

“People move to Texas because they’re attracted to the Lone Star State’s jobs and opportunity,” says TPPF’s Chuck DeVore, who came to Texas after serving in the California Assembly. “States that drive them away—with high taxes and ridiculous regulatory burdens—would do better to imitate what works: liberty.”

Entrepreneurship and COVID-19

What to Know: The coronavirus pandemic has sent the U.S. economy into a recession. But entrepreneurship can help lift us out again.

The TPPF Take: Entrepreneurs are already finding ways to deal with the coronavirus and get us all prospering again.

“From Plexiglass dividers in stores and stickers for social distancing, to food-to-go apps and meal delivery (even with robots), businesses are finding ways to ways to reduce the virus’ contagion,” says TPPF’s Vance Ginn. “Others are developing the vaccines that will protect us. Let’s make sure entrepreneurs have the freedom to find the solutions that work—as they have so often in our past.”

Big Payout

What to Know: The former Laredo city manager has received a taxpayer-funded severance package worth $880,000.

The TPPF Take: It’s time to end the practice of giving golden parachutes to government employees.

“Supersized severance packages have no place in Texas public policy. That’s especially true today when so many people are struggling to find work and feed their families,” says TPPF’s James Quintero. “We need to stop this abusive practice by passing strict, new laws—just like other states have already done.”
