One-third of all alcohol shipped into Michigan was illegal

Of the 1,535,616 bottles of alcohol shipped into Michigan in the first quarter of 2020, one-third were shipped illegally, Michigan Beer & Wine Wholesalers Association estimates. “As we review the data each year it is becoming abundantly clear that out-of-state retailers have no regard for Michigan law and will continue breaking the rules until they’re held accountable,” Spencer Nevins, president of the Michigan Beer & Wine Wholesalers Association said. “We encourage the Michigan Liquor Control Commission and the Michigan Attorney General’s Office to continue investigating each and every complaint and to crack down on these bad actors.”

TTB warns producers against making health claims in advertising

The U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) published a memo recently warning producers to stop touting the health benefits of certain alcoholic beverages in response to an influx of such claims. McDermott, Will & Emery counsel Nichole Shustack told Brewbound, “Saying your product is, for example, healthier than another product or even alluding to that in the advertising because that product is 150 calories, that’s where you start walking the line.”

Dunkaroos cookie beer

If you grew up in the 90’s you probably had Dunkaroos in your lunchbox. General Mills finally re-released the nostalgic-cookies in the United States this February. Likely inspired by the return of the treat, Texas-based brewery Martin House Brewing Company just released a limited-edition DunkAbroos beer. If you were interested in tasting it, too late -- the beer sold out in only two days.

NY Liquor Authority has pulled almost 150 licenses to date

Nearly 150 businesses in New York state have lost their liquor licenses to date for violating COVID-19 social distancing guidance, the State Liquor Authority announced this week. Business owners found guilty of allegations face a $10,000 maximum fine per violation.
