'Transparent' with 'strong financial management': High credit ratings are a win for wastewater ratepayers

Our Wastewater Treatment Division has earned high credit ratings from both Moody's and S&P Global, citing "strong financial management" and "transparent and well-defined financial management practices."
The high credit ratings make it possible for King County to borrow money at a lower interest rate for projects that modernize and build critical infrastructure [ [link removed] ], lowering the costs for ratepayers.
Our Wastewater Treatment Division has a well-established reputation for strong financial stewardship, having earned high credit scores for more than 15 consecutive years. That has helped them compete for low-interest loans, including a state revolving fund that has saved ratepayers $162 million over the past decade.

The historic December floods have created potential new hazards in rivers throughout King County, prompting experts from multiple agencies -- including our Water and Land Resources Division -- to encourage extra caution [ [link removed] ] this summer.
Flooding moved logs, rocks, and other hazards into rivers throughout King County, creating new risks that might not be visible above the surface. Historically high flows shifted riverbeds, resulting in deeper or shallower pools that can create hazards for swimmers, tubers, boaters, and kayakers.

Join King County Parks on Saturday, June 6 for a community celebration of the newly upgraded Dockton Park and Marina!
Enjoy hands-on activities led by local groups, from a boat showcase by the Quartermaster Yacht Club to knot tying demonstrations by teen sailors from the Sea Scout Ship Odyssey. You’ll also have opportunities to connect with the Vashon Heritage Museum, Vashon Bird Alliance, and Vashon Nature Center.

King County Parks has acquired the site for Skyway Community Center

King County Parks successfully completed the purchase of Skyway Park Bowl, which will be transformed into the location for Skyway's first community center. The 3.82-acre property is adjacent to the northwest corner of King County's Skyway Park.
The community will have multiple opportunities to help design the community center and determine which programs it will offer, starting with a kickoff event later this year.
"We're grateful to all the community partners who shared their time and insights to help us select a location the reflects their priorities," said King County Parks Director Warren Jimenez. "We're looking forward to the next phase: Designing a community center that offers year-round healthy connections."

A decade of repair: Volunteer fixers at 100th community repair event keep household items out of the landfill

Our Solid Waste Division marked a major milestone on May 9 when they hosted their 100th community repair event, celebrating a decade of helping residents keep household items out of Cedar Hills Regional Landfill.
Volunteers help their neighbors repair a wide range of household items, such as lamps, clothing, jewelry, and vacuum cleaners. They typically repair about 70% of the items and offer a diagnosis and advice for those that can't be fixed. Last year, the roster of 35 volunteer fixers repaired more than 600 items.

Trailhead Direct returns for summer!

Trailhead Direct -- King County's popular transit-to-trails service [ [link removed] ] -- is back for a ninth season, making it easier for residents and visitors to explore our region's spectacular hiking trails without the stress of driving or parking.
The service -- a partnership with King County Metro, King County Parks, and Seattle Department of Transportation -- will run through Aug. 30 with routes operating on Independence Day.
