General James Mattis, former Defense Secretary, said: “Nations with allies thrive, and those without them wither… Alone, America cannot protect our people and our economy. At this time, we can see storm clouds gathering.”

I agree. I said this in my announcement speech:

America’s greatest power is its power to convene, to bring the peoples and nations of the world together for a common cause that serves us all. That is what America had been doing ever since the world’s greatest generation had returned home from having defeated the horrors of fascism and imperialism in the second of the world wars. And they swore it wouldn’t happen, again, to us, a third time.

They kept their promise by building the liberal world order based upon the rules of individual and human rights, open and fair markets, fair and just governments. It was one that embraced the world’s collective good. Whether Stalinism or human rights atrocities, dire poverty or world recessions, we convened the world by the power of these ideals. By bringing together those that shared these values in multilateral organizations and agreements, and by leading those efforts, we all became stronger, safer, healthier and more prosperous in our freedoms.

On the campaign trail

It's been a great week in Iowa - with two "Cup of Joe on the Issues" events already, and one more to come. I'll be continuing to travel across the state this weekend and early next week, before traveling to New York, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and New Hampshire.

Sunday, September 1st:

• Fort Dodge, Iowa: I will be speaking at the AFL-CIO’s Fort Dodge Labor Day Picnic on Sunday, 1st of September, at 1.40pm in Fort Dodge, Iowa.

Monday, September 2nd:

• Sioux City, Iowa: See me speak at the AFL-CIO’s Sioux City Labor Day Picnic at 11.35am on Monday, September 2nd, at Riverside Park (1301 Riverside Boulevard, Sioux City, IA 51109).
• Council Bluffs, Iowa: I will speak at the AFL-CIO Council Bluffs Picnic at 4.55pm on Monday, September 2nd, at Lake Manawa State Park Shelter #6 (2 and a half miles south of Interstate 80 (exit 3), Council Bluffs, IA 51503).

Tuesday, September 3rd:

• Clive, Iowa: I will be speaking to Southeast Dallas County Democrats at 8pm (meeting starts at 6.30) on Tuesday, September 3rd, at Rookies Sports Bar and Grill (2180 NW 156th St, Clive, IA  50325).

Wednesday, September 4th:

• Des Moines, Iowa: I am speaking at the Iowa Caucus Consortium’s first Candidate Forum Series Presented by Bank of America event for the 2020 cycle -- on Wednesday, Sept. 4 from 7:30 – 9 a.m. at the State Historical Building. For more details, click here.
