Fellow Republicans,
In the last few days I have received several calls regarding my support of any candidates in the upcoming election. In particular a number of these questions were directly related to the 3 candidates running for my previously held Congressional seat.
My response has been simple.
It is against the rules of the Republican Party for any officer, county or state, to publicly endorse or support a candidate in a contested primary.
In addition, it has long been my practice to not endorse or support any candidate in contested primaries.
It has been my experience that when prominent elected officials or groups endorse a candidate they do so publicly; candidates should have a full vetted listing of those endorsements available for you to review.
These factors lead me to make clear that I am in no manner supporting any of the 3 candidates in the primary race for CD-2.
We cannot afford divisive primaries in 2020. The stakes are too high and any fracture in our party will cost votes.
My question for each of these candidates is straightforward:
“If you are not successful, will you endorse the winner?”
If you get a chance to visit with any candidate it would be a crucial question to ask if they have made the same pledge.
I ask that each candidate make a pledge now to back the winner, regardless of outcome and that these campaigns remain above reproach by not insinuating endorsements in mailers, photos, or verbally as they work to earn your vote.
As Chairman of the Party, I pledge that we will steadfastly work to support whichever candidate the voters decide will best represent us.
