Hi John,
According to the U.S. government, the Catholic Church is a “small business.”

It must be -- because the Associated Press reports that taxpayer-backed aid to the massive religious organization “may have reached -- or even exceeded -- $3.5 billion.”

The Small Business Administration normally only helps businesses with under 500 employees -- not powerhouse churches with over a billion followers. But the Catholic Church lobbied the Trump administration for an exception, and they got one. According to University of Virginia law professor Micah Schwartzman, “That favoritism was worth billions of dollars.”

Other tax-free churches similarly made out like bandits, with NPR reporting that as much as $10 billion was dispersed to religious groups across the country. Meanwhile real small businesses -- particularly those owned by Americans of color -- have been left without a dime from the federal government. No doubt many of those struggling business owners will be handed a collection plate on Sunday and told to give what they can. Is this the country you want to live in?

Should tax-free churches receive taxpayer aid?
