Why the Democrats are suddenly talking about the US Postal Service -- and what it means for the election. "The media and numerous Democrats have promoted multiple conspiracy theories about the Trump administration and the U.S. Postal Service in recent days, accusing President Trump of attempting to gain control of the USPS to 'steal' the election" (Daily Wire) • What's happening: The left has had a difficult time re-writing election rules through the courts (remember: last month a Democratic super PAC dropped its challenge in Florida).
And now they've emerged from the weekend with a full-court press to "protect" the US Postal Service -- which appears to be a series of increasingly panicked tweets and speeches.
if you want to know what's happening, check out 10 things to know from the Daily Wire and 6 myths debunked from The Federalist.
• What's at stake: This election will likely see an unprecedented spike in mail-in voting. That's why what happens with the US Postal Service is so critical ... and the Democrats' attempts to incite hysteria are so damaging.
(1) The Democrats are dramatically calling the House back into session, but it's unclear if their legislation will help anything. Reportedly, it will simply stop the Post Office from making any changes that weren't already in place on January 1, 2020.
So they want the American people to believe that President Trump is (1) simultaneously "destroying" the postal service and (2) the solution is to roll back to previous Trump Administration policies from January. Huh. Funny how that line of argument works!
(2) The Postal Service has already warned states about delivery issues. Last week, The Vote highlighted its letter to Pennsylvania that claimed they "can't guarantee timely delivery" for mail ballots.
So now Democrats want to make expected, documented issues with the Postal Service seem like a personal failure or scheme from President Trump and his campaign team.
(3) We try not to be cynical, but we would predict:
-- This issue will morph into the necessity for Democrats to challenge election counts in many states after the November election. Remember: Joe Biden has a team of 600 lawyers ready to go.
-- It's bizarre for Democrats to rally around this issue during the week of their convention. Normally parties like to keep the focus on their nominee and VIP speeches. We can't imagine this alternate focus is a good sign for Democrats' support of Joe Biden.
• What else to know: Some of the changes to the Postal Service that the media now breathlessly reports were previously done by the Obama Administration, too.
What to expect from the first night of the Democratic National Convention. "A Democratic National Convention like no other will kick off on Monday, reaching a climax with a speech by newly minted presidential nominee Joe Biden on Thursday evening. The convention, originally scheduled for Milwaukee, was first postponed from July to August over concerns about the coronavirus, and then moved almost entirely online." (The Hill) • What's happening: The all-virtual Democratic National Convention officially kicks off tonight. There will be two hours of prime-time coverage of speeches from major figures in the party.
Now here is a selection of the high-profile speeches you can expect tonight:
-- Sen. Amy Klobuchar, who dropped out of the presidential primary and endorsed Biden
-- Governor Gretchen Whitmer, who reportedly was a top contender for VP
-- Senator Bernie Sanders, who needs no introduction to readers of The Vote
-- Former First Lady Michelle Obama
• What's at stake: We just have two big questions as we head into the kick-off tonight.
(1) How enjoyable and exciting is a virtual convention? This is a first (for both parties!), and it had to be planned on short notice too. Normally convention speeches are exciting due to the energy and reaction of the crowd -- not to mention the balloon drops!
So we want to know how enjoyable and exciting virtual coverage is because that will determine how many Americans tune in ... especially since national Democrats seem focused on stealing attention away from this event with their new focus on the US Postal Service.
(2) What does Bernie Sanders say in his speech? Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) was restricted to a 60-second, pre-recorded video. But Sanders has openly called for party unity, even while his supporters try to push the Democrats to the extreme left.
What will he use his convention time to say, and will his supporters listen? If Sanders' supporters don't turn out for Biden in November, he'll be in big trouble at the polls.
• What else to know: President Trump and his campaign are planning events this week, too, in response to the Democratic convention. President Trump will speak in Pennsylvania on Thursday, the same day as Joe Biden's acceptance speech. The campaign will also host a "nightly recap" of the Democratic events.
Get your guesses in! Kasich says "prominent" former GOP Congressman will announce support of Biden today. "Twitter has been buzzing with speculation ever since former Ohio Gov. John Kasich told CNN on Sunday that a 'prominent' Republican congressman would declare their support for Joe Biden. Kasich predicted that the unidentified GOP figure could make the announcement on Monday." (Fox News) • What's happening: Ahead of his speech at the Democratic National Convention this week, former governor and GOP presidential candidate John Kasich said a "prominent" Congressman (later updated to former Congressman) will announce support for Joe Biden.
• What's at stake: Well, everyone enjoys a guessing game, and this certainly is one. Political analysts and reporters have suggested their own theories for the mystery figures. One politician mentioned -- Justin Amash -- already confirmed it wasn't him.
A single endorsement is unlikely to change a presidential election.
So what we'd note is this: Biden's push to reach out to Republicans could come at a cost with far-left progressives in his own party. They're already angry with the Democratic Party for not including Medicare for All in its official platform; they'll likely feel worse if more Republicans express their support for Biden.
• What else to know: Alumni of the George W. Bush Administration already launched a super PAC in support of Joe Biden this year: 43 Alumni for Joe Biden.
Squad member Rep. Rashida Tlaib shows votes against the Democratic Party platform and Joe Biden as nominee. "Progressive darling and Squad member Rashida Tlaib on Saturday voted 'no' on the Democratic Party platform. Talib said she voted 'no' because she wants to see Medicare for All." (Townhall) • What's happening: Rep. Rashida Tlaib, one of the four members of the "Squad," tweeted a photo of her convention ballot that showed a vote against the party platform ... and a vote for Bernie Sanders. You can see the tweet for yourself here.
• What's at stake: It's the most under-reported story of the 2020 election: the deep split between the far-left progressive wing and "establishment" Democrats ... and why it's bad news for Joe Biden.
Sanders' supporters pledged to stage a convention "rebellion," and Rep. Tlaib is the most high-profile member to join their efforts.
This doesn't bode well for Joe Biden, who faces a deep split in his party and a major lack of enthusiasm among the Democratic base.
