Good morning John

* A £50million investment to boost start-up companies, support hundreds of highly skilled, well-paid jobs and additional funding for a skills initiative.
* 1,000 new jobs for Northern Ireland announced by the second largest banking institution in the United States.

These investments are different in nature, but they have many things in common. They are both highly significant for somewhere the size of Northern Ireland. They both help grow our economy and will deliver good jobs that will put food on the table and pay the bills for many families.

The other thing they have in common is they are both opposed by the First Minister and her Party. Whilst Emma Little Pengelly once again turned up, stood up and spoke up on behalf of Northern Ireland, Michelle O’Neill was nowhere to be seen.


Unfortunately for the people of Northern Ireland, the promise of a “First Minister for All” has been replaced by a First Minister that’s gone AWOL.


Instead of being driven by the best interests of Northern Ireland, Sinn Fein are captured by the hard-left and narrow sectional interests. Indeed, this week they were so desperate to avoid being outflanked on criticisms of the United States and the current administration that Sinn Fein MLAs were prepared to vote for a motion which explicitly criticised their own Party colleague and Economy Minister Caoimhe Archibald.

That brings me back to the £50million Defence Growth Deal for Northern Ireland announced on Wednesday. Knowing these growth deals were being developed, I, alongside colleagues, worked with Government to make the case for Northern Ireland. Whilst others turned the other way it was the DUP who delivered real results.

The defence sector of the 21^st Century isn’t all about bullets and tanks. It’s about advanced manufacturing and even cyber-security to protect not just our nation but our allies from the threats we face. Indeed, the very skills and industries being supported will undoubtedly help cover the gaping hole in Europe’s defence that is the Republic of Ireland.


Whilst others cannot be relied on, the DUP will be there. We will continue to be the champions for economic growth, innovation and skills.


When Michelle O’Neill did turn up this week it was to make predictions about a border poll. If you missed those bold claims then don’t worry, there’ll be another prediction along shortly pushing the date back by another few years.


The rhetoric that “unity” is just around the corner has been repeated so often that if you were doing your 11+ in the year the Provisional IRA first predicted would be the “year of victory”, you’re now just a couple of years away from collecting your UK state pension.


I’ve said before in the face of such predictions that we should be confident but not complacent. Those of us who value our place in the United Kingdom must work together not just to promote and maximise its benefits, but to promote and maximise the number of pro-Union representatives returned to represent the people of Northern Ireland.
