This week, five legislators on the Assembly Local Government Committee voted Aye for the neighborhood-crushing SB 1120. SB 1120 and its cousin, SB 902, now head to Assembly Appropriations. We have less than 2 weeks to kill these bills!
SB 1120 ends single family zoning, allowing homes to be demolished, the lots split in half, and two houses built on each new half — with no yards, no garages.
SB 1120 puts working-class & middle-class streets on the chopping block.
Developers can build 4 profitable rental homes where 1 owned home now stands.
Racially diverse, working-class and middle-class regions of SoCal will be overrun. So will areas near Silicon Valley. Among the many threatened communities:
- South L.A.
- L.A.’s Eastside
- San Fernando Valley
- San Gabriel Valley’s Arcadia, Whittier, Hacienda Heights
- L.A. Southeast cities Paramount, Compton, South Gate
- Central Orange County and beach cities
- Bay Area’s Castro Valley, Fremont, Hayward
- Contra Costa Co. including Lafayette, Moraga, Orinda
Black residents of South L.A. testified against SB 1120 this week — and many were cut off by the committee, while speaking. Now they’ll be heard. Aug. 15, 11am.
