Shipments of nearly 20,000 fake driver's licenses seized at Chicago airport

Federal customs officers have seized 1,513 shipments from overseas containing fraudulent documents—including 19,888 counterfeit U.S. driver's licenses—at Chicago O'Hare International Airport this year through the end of June. "These counterfeit driver's licenses can lead to disastrous consequences," U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Ralph Piccirilli said in a statement. CBS notes that fraudulent IDs go beyond illegal underage drinking, they can also be used for crimes such as identity theft and human trafficking.

Amazon looks into turning mall stores into fulfillment centers

Recent reports show that Amazon is in talks with Simon Property, the biggest mall owner in the U.S., to explore the possibility of turning store spaces previously occupied by J.C. Penney and Sears into distribution hubs for the e-retailer. Both J.C. Penney and Sears have filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, with the companies shutting dozens of stores across the country. Fulfillment centers in malls, typically located close to residential areas, could allow Amazon to speed up its last-mile delivery to customers.

Restaurant industry gains 502,000 jobs in July

The restaurant industry is showing some signs of recovery, but it's still far behind pre-COVID employment levels. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the restaurant industry gained 502,000 jobs in July. Roughly 9.86 million workers were on payroll in July compared to 9.38 million in June and 7.8 million in May. Despite the improvement, employment in the industry is still down 2.6 million compared to February.
