Hi Friend —
Pennsylvania’s weather is going haywire. We’re seeing temperatures swing 40 degrees in a day, and spring and summer are coming earlier and getting hotter each year. [1]
All these changes mean that we’re seeing more frequent and severe storms causing rivers and creeks to overflow and flood our communities. And it’s only getting worse.
Flooding is now the most common natural disaster in Pennsylvania, and it isn’t a problem that’s easy to fix. Communities are struggling to keep up and to keep people safe.
Fortunately, there are two bills in the Pennsylvania State House – stormwater solutions Bills 990 and 991 – that would help local officials put solutions in place faster and for less money. [2]
But even though flooding impacts nearly every district, these bills aren’t getting the attention they deserve. We need your help.
Can you please take a minute to urge your state representative to support HB 990 and HB 991 to give local officials the resources they need to protect people from flooding? [link removed]
When heavy rain falls, it flows across streets, lawns, and parking lots and picks up fertilizers, oil, old road salt, and garbage.
All of this dangerous and dirty stormwater is washed directly into our rivers and streams, polluting our drinking water sources.
Plus, Pennsylvania is covered by hills and valleys, which means our rivers are extremely prone to flash flooding.
So why isn’t more being done? Because current requirements make it harder than it should be to fund and build needed systems to better prepare communities for flooding.
House Bills 990 and 991 would help clear out the red tape by giving municipalities the option to charge a stormwater management fee without the costly and time-consuming requirement to create a new authority.
Bottom line – storms and flooding are getting worse, and our communities are too bogged down to do anything about it. Let’s come together and support common-sense legislation that will help communities replace outdated infrastructure, protect rivers and streams, and keep people safe.
Ask your state representative to support stormwater solutions, HB 990 and 991: [link removed]
Thanks for being part of this!
