Hi John,

There’s a fable about a frog being placed into a pot of boiling water.

Make the water too hot right away, the story goes, and the frog will immediately jump out and away to safety. But start the water off nice and cool -- and then slowly but surely turn up the heat -- and soon enough, the frog will be cooked before it even notices anything is amiss.

Have you noticed anything amiss lately?

How about Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar declaring the Department of Health the “Department of Life?” We’ve seen the “Department of Life” cut funding to health clinics that provide abortion care and move to enable health care discrimination against women and LGBTQ+ Americans.

Or what about EPA head Scott Pruitt using the Bible to justify loosening regulations on big polluters? He’s been replaced by Andrew Wheeler, who’d rather lend his ear to creationists than to the global scientific community when it comes to climate change. Unsurprisingly, the rollbacks have continued.

It’s safe to say the water’s boiling. But there’s still time for us to escape this Christian nationalist nightmare -- as long as we act. Now.

With your help, we’ve lobbied for reason, science, and secular thought in the federal government. We helped form the Congressional Freethought Congress, a coalition of elected officials in the House of Representatives who are committed to fighting against religious bigotry in all its forms.

But when we stop and think about how far the slow-moving coup of the religious far-right has already come, we know we need to do a lot more.

If we raise $1,000 today to stop extremists in government, we can redouble our efforts toward amplifying the voices of scientific experts -- on subjects like climate change, health care, and human rights. We can reverse this dangerous trend before it’s too late.

But right now, we’re falling short of our goal. If we don’t keep up with our projections, our operations will not have the resources to meet this challenge.

And the water will only get hotter.

If you’re ready to reject the philosophy of the religious right - if you’d rather the crucial decisions on the safety of our citizens and our planet be informed by experts, not zealots - and if you’d like to help build a safer, saner, stronger America - please, help us hit our goal. Our work can’t and won’t happen without you.

Thank you for helping us fight back.
