*Governor Kelly Appoints Debra Wright to Fill District Court Position in the 28th Judicial District*

TOPEKA* – Governor Laura Kelly today appointed Debra Wright of Beloit to a judgeship position in the 28th Judicial District. The vacancy was created by the retirement of Judge Paul Hickman.

“Debra Wright is a seasoned judge who has served her community for over a decade as a magistrate judge in Mitchell County,” *Governor Laura Kelly said.* “I am confident that she will bring the same impartiality, legal expertise, and professionalism to her new role in the 28th Judicial District.”

Wright currently serves as a magistrate judge in the 12th Judicial District. Prior to being elected as magistrate, she was Lead Counsel in the 17th Judicial Circuit Court of Missouri. She is a member of the Kansas Magistrate Judges Association, Kansas Bar Association, Supreme Court of Kansas E-Steering Committee, and Child Welfare Task Force. She is also involved in coaching youth basketball, volunteering for school events, and coaching a mock trial program.

“I am deeply honored by Governor Kelly’s selection and humbled by the opportunity she has given me to serve the people of the 28th Judicial District,” *said Debra Wright.* “I am committed to administering justice with impartiality, fairness, and integrity, and to upholding the rule of law for all who come before the court.”

District Court Judges in the 28th Judicial District are appointed by the governor and selected from nominees chosen by a district nominating commission. Judges in nominating commission districts are subject to retention elections every four years.

The other nominees selected by the district nominating commission were Michelle Martin and Alexander Driskell.
