Hello John,
Yesterday was the 55th anniversary of President Lyndon B. Johnson signing the Voting Rights Act of 1965 into law.
The Voting Rights Act of 1965 guaranteed voting protections and outlawed discriminatory practices meant to suppress Black and Brown votes.
Thanks to civil rights leaders like John Lewis demanding equal access to vote, communities of color had their voices heard at the ballot box.
Representative John Lewis knew that voting was the most powerful tool we have in our democracy and risked his life for our ability to vote without fear and intimidation.
But our work is not done.
In 2013, the Supreme Court struck down the Voting Rights Act making it largely unenforceable. Since then, we’ve seen massive efforts to disenfranchise voters and make voting inaccessible to communities of color. In 2020, this is unacceptable.
In memory of John Lewis, who was beaten, harassed, and arrested for protecting our right to vote, sign my petition today demanding Congress pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to restore the VRA >>
Rep. John Lewis devoted his life to fighting for voting rights, and it is our duty to finish his work. Thank you for being with us.
In solidarity,
Barbara Lee
