Friends,
The Voting Rights Act was signed into law on this day in 1965. It was a crucial piece of legislation that outlawed discriminatory voting practices.
The bill banned literacy tests, provided federal oversight for voting in areas where less than 50% of non-white residents were registered to vote, and authorized the U.S. Attorney General to investigate that area’s use of a poll tax.
But in the seven years since the Supreme Court has canceled the act, the door has been left wide open for voter suppression and attacks on our fair elections.
To this day there are bans on same-day voter registration, strict voter-ID laws, polling station closures, restrictions on early voting, and limitations on absentee and mail-in voting options. And in this pivotal election year, GOP efforts to suppress voters have run even more rampant in their attempts to capitalize on this pandemic.
My job is to ensure that everyone's voice is heard through their vote, and it shouldn't be a partisan issue. Our democracy is up against a tough task this year with breaking down Republican barriers to voting equality and guaranteeing fair elections for all — so I need your help protecting our fundamental right to vote.
Will you help me restore the principles enacted in The Voting Rights Act and prevent discriminatory voter suppression efforts? Make a donation now to fight back with me >>
