I’m furious that I even have to write this today but Republicans are pushing to deny immigrant children an education.

These are kids .

Kids who want to learn. Kids who want to feel safe. Kids who deserve to walk into a public school without fear hanging over their heads.

But right now, we are watching extremists try to turn immigrant children into political targets and I will not stand by and let that happen.

I’m a former middle school teacher, and I can tell you this: you learn a lot about what kids are carrying before they ever say a word.

You see it in their faces. You hear it in the way they hesitate. You feel it in the moments when a child is trying to focus, trying to be brave, trying to make it through the day while carrying far more than any kid should have to carry.

Kids come into the classroom carrying hunger. Anxiety. Fear. Hope. The need to belong. And they need to feel seen.

Public school should be a place that meets them with stability, support, and opportunity — not more fear. And yet that is exactly what Republicans are doing right now. They are targeting immigrant children and treating them like pawns in their sick political game.

It is cruel. It is dangerous. And it is deeply un-American.

I spoke out because I know what school means to a child. I know what a safe classroom can mean. I know what it means for a kid to have one place in their day where they can breathe, learn, and believe they matter.

That is what public education is supposed to be.

So when politicians start arguing that some children are not entitled to that because of where they were born or who their parents are, we have to call this what it is: an attack on kids.

Because kids today are already carrying so much.

They are growing up with the fear of gun violence in schools.
They are living with the anxiety of climate change.
They are navigating loneliness, disconnection, and a world that too often makes them feel so small.

And for immigrant kids, that fear is even heavier. Families are dealing with raids, intimidation, and the constant terror that their lives can be upended at any moment.

No child should have to live like that. No parent should have to drop their kid off at school wondering if fear will be waiting for them there. And no politician should be allowed to score points or keep their job by attacking children.

As a teacher, I learned that kids do better when they feel safe, when they feel supported, and when they know someone is fighting for them.

That is still what I believe. And that is still what I am fighting for.
