Hi John,
Today marks 8 years since a white supremacist neo-Nazi walked into a Sikh temple in Wisconsin and shot 10 people.
Six innocent people died that day. A seventh victim passed away from his injuries just earlier this year.
The gunman, who we won’t name here, was convinced he was fighting a “racial holy war.”
We won’t heap the blame for his violence at the feet of Christian nationalists. But the failure to take meaningful action on gun control in the near-decade that’s passed since is because of the religious right.
A research article published in a journal of the American Sociological Association found that “opposition to stricter gun control is closely linked to Christian nationalism,” and that “for the substantial proportion of American society who are Christian nationalists, gun rights are God given and sacred.”
This is one of the biggest dangers in linking religion to national identity. It’s exactly what we’re fighting against.
We need more representatives who’ll stand against Christian nationalism and against special interest groups like the NRA who invoke religious language to justify their extremist agenda.
We need to pass commonsense gun reform -- like any one of the 100+ proposals that have failed in Congress in the last decade.
But the gun lobby spent over $12 million last year alone. And right now, we’re outmatched, plain and simple.
That’s why, today, we’re asking for your help. We’d like to raise $1,000 before midnight to strengthen our mission to support secular representatives, advance progressive legislation like the Gun Violence Prevention and Community Safety Act of 2020, and push back against Christian nationalism in all its most dangerous forms. Please, if you want to live in a safer, saner, stronger America -- give what you can now to help us get there.
Thank you for helping us commemorate this solemn anniversary with action.
Thank you for helping us fight to save this country.
