‘Alcohol and me’ - announcing this year's Alcohol Awareness Week theme
[link removed]

This year’s Alcohol Awareness Week takes place from 6-12 July 2026, focusing on the theme “Alcohol and Me.”

In a world where big alcohol companies present drinking as an essential part of celebrations and everyday moments – from birthdays and barbecues to quiet nights in and cheering on our favourite teams – it’s no surprise that alcohol can feel woven into our daily lives.

This July, we’re inviting a different kind of conversation. We’re asking: What role does alcohol really play in our lives, and how is it affecting our wellbeing?

We’re encouraging everyone to take just two minutes to reflect on their relationship with alcohol. Throughout the week, we’ll also be sharing:
* Practical tools to help you understand how alcohol may be impacting your health and wellbeing, and to consider what – if anything – you’d like to change
* Top tips for cutting down
* Real stories of change from people who’ve rethought their drinking

Alcohol Awareness Week is a chance for charities, local authorities, GP practices, workplaces and community groups to open up conversations about alcohol’s impact – on ourselves and on those around us.

2,500 repeat drink drivers caught in 11 years

More than 2,500 motorists have been caught drink driving at least three times in the past 11 years, according to new analysis by the RAC. In total, 2,553 drivers received three or more endorsements, including one convicted 10 times. The RAC says disqualification alone is failing to stop repeat offending and has called for mandatory alcohol interlocks for persistent offenders.

You can shape policy on the legal drink drive limit

The UK Government is consulting on lowering the legal drink drive limit in England and Wales, which hasn’t changed since 1967 and is the highest in Europe.

Lowering the legal limit will reduce road collisions and save lives. There is clear evidence that a person's ability to drive is affected after consuming any amount of alcohol. As a result, we support reducing the limit to:
* 9µg (microgrammes of alcohol)/100ml (millilitres) breath
* 20mg (milligrammes of alcohol)/100ml (millilitres) blood or 0.02% BAC (blood alcohol content)

This is essentially a 'zero-tolerance' limit, which allows for low but traceable levels of alcohol which may exist in someone’s body, and for minimal presence of alcohol, like if someone has used mouthwash or certain medications.

The consultation seeks views from all road users. You can help us call for a lower drink drive limit by responding to the consultation ([link removed]) before 11:59pm on 11 May 2026.

Our guide will support you to be heard and make a vital difference – whether you have 10, 20, or 30 minutes to spare.
