Today, we need your voice to confront a devastating truth: the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) is still endorsing Ventilation Shutdown Plus (VSD+), a mass killing method that shuts off air circulation in a barn and pumps in heat, slowly cooking animals to death. In rarer situations, AVMA is still endorsing Ventilation Shutdown (VSD) on its own—the same process but without the added heat, so that it is the animals' own body heat that causes them to cook.

In the AVMA's updated 2026 guidelines for depopulation, used by government agencies to dictate policy related to the mass extermination of animals during emergencies and infectious disease outbreaks, the use of VSD and VSD+ is endorsed for the mass killing of chickens, turkeys, ducks, and pigs.

We've seen how gruesome this is. Through public records from North Carolina State University, we uncovered industry funded experiments on ventilation shutdown (VSD and VSD+) for chickens.

In these tests, hens were trapped in small boxes while airflow was cut off, heat was raised and sometimes carbon dioxide was added. As conditions worsened, birds writhed, gasped, panted, staggered, and threw themselves against the walls before collapsing and dying from heat and suffocation—while researchers calmly watched, took notes and sat in front of fans with bottled water.

We also obtained documents under Iowa's Open Records Law—and our legal team successfully challenged their redactions—revealing how VSD+ was used at multiple chicken facilities in response to bird flu outbreaks. In some barns, birds were subjected to between an hour and a half and nearly five hours of VSD+, and where the process was done sloppily, many birds endured and still had to be killed by other methods.

Despite this, the AVMA's new depopulation guidelines still approve VSD and VSD+.

While there is no definitive data on the total number of animals killed using VSD and VSD+, production shutdowns during COVID and repeated bird flu outbreaks mean we are talking about millions of animals—possibly well over 100 million.

This isn't humane. It's a slow, terrifying death—and veterinarians are giving it their stamp of approval.

We disagree. So do ethical veterinarians at Our Honor, such as Dr. Crystal Heath who has been a leading voice in this field. Now the AVMA board needs to hear from you.
