For four decades, since our founding in 1986, Egale has helped shape what equality and inclusion looks like in Canada — from fighting for recognition under the Charter, to advancing legal protections and defending 2SLGBTQI communities in moments of backlash.
The rights many people experience today did not happen by accident. They were built — case by case, policy by policy, community by community.
Over the next year, we’ll be sharing milestone moments that show how Egale’s work has helped move Canada forward.
This is 40 Years of Progress. This is what it takes to build — and defend — equality.

With the 2026 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games underway, it’s important for people to recognize all athletes – including 2SLGBTQI athletes. Historically, 2SLGBTQI people, especially those who are trans, nonbinary, intersex or gender nonconforming, face exclusion in sport.
Sport is for everyone, and every athlete, regardless of gender identity, attraction, or level of sport, deserves to compete and be celebrated fairly.

2025 was a significant year for legal advocacy at Egale: we expanded our legal team, and with the help of dozens of dedicated pro bono lawyers and law students, we have led the fight to respond to rising 2SLGBTQI hate in the courts—in particular, government policies targeting gender diverse youth.
