Hello John,

Today is Safer Internet Day ([link removed]) , which we at NYCI are delighted to support. We all have a role to play in supporting young people to use the internet and digital technologies safely and positively. The theme is “AI: Aware, Safe, and in Control” and the campaign aims to raise awareness of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

To help you in this important work, we've compiled some free resources and trainings that you might be interested in!

Supporting Digital Literacy in Young People

How can we, as youth workers, mitigate the impacts of algorithms and influencers on young people's lives?

Here's one way: through the Connected ([link removed]) resource, a collaboration between NYCI's Child Protection Programme and Webwise.

The resource includes four workshops to support young people with information and practical activities:
* My Online Wellbeing
* News, Media, and the Problems of False Information
* Big Data and the Data Economy
* Young People's Rights Online

Free Online Safety & Awareness Training

Our free e-learning course, Online Safety and Awareness in Youth Work ([link removed]) , was created for youth workers and volunteers. As well as introducing key topics in online safety, it addresses the challenges young people may face online. It also explores the importance of digital awareness in your role and ways you can support youth online safety.

Empowering Young Minds Against Cyberbullying

Cyberbullying has been shown to cause as much harm as conventional bullying, and in some cases, can be much worse.

In response to conversations with youth workers, the National Youth Health Programme team developed Stay Safe Online: Empowering Young Minds Against Cyberbullying ([link removed]) . The resource is designed to empower youth workers, parents, guardians, and caregivers with the knowledge to support our young people.

Our work on AI and Youth Work

NYCI’s STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Maths) programme is actively integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) and emerging technologies into its work to support young people and youth workers to engage confidently and critically with AI.

We have launched initiatives in collaboration with Insight Centre for Data Analytics at Dublin City University and the Ombudsman for Children’s Office to equip youth workers and young people, particularly those from marginalised backgrounds, with practical skills and an understanding of AI and data. This work includes training programmes and ‘AI Youth Juries ([link removed]) ’ that support informed dialogue and youth participation on AI and emerging technologies.

I hope you find these resources useful - not just on Safer Internet Day, but in your work throughout the year - and if you have any questions or feedback, we'd love to hear from you.

Warm regards,
