METRO-DETROIT DSABULLETINBOARD — WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS

We are less than a week away from one of the most important Michigan primaries.

Representative Rashida Tlaib is up against Detroit Councilwoman Brenda Jones. Jones is stale, conservative, and a non-ally to the Detroit movement to defund the police and rebuild our neighborhoods <[link removed]>.

Rashida has always been a vocal ally, teaming up with Rep. Ayanna Pressley on the BREATHE Act, which seeks to eliminate the DEA, ICE, surveillance programs, along with other bold criminal justice reforms.

New kid on the block, Abraham Aiyash <[link removed]>, is a community organizer, past city commissioner, and an outspoken socialist supporting policies like M4A or $15 minimum wage. Endorsed by Bernie Sanders, he is a powerful comrade that will help transform District 4.

We need your help! NOW is the critical time to knock doors or make calls to spread the word for both Abe and Rashida.

<[link removed]>KNOCK DOORS <[link removed]>

The Black & Brown Alliance of the Detroit DSA <[link removed]> has partnered with Community Movement Builders <[link removed]> and General Baker Institute <[link removed]> to bring you Liberation Mondays <[link removed]>.

Hundreds have attended these community conversations since its inception just a few weeks ago. Each week, the community is joined by a series of black and brown panelists to talk about the current political moment and the power we have to dismantle the power structures that allow oppressive systems to operate.

Through these conversations, the need to defund, demilitarize, and disarm the police is made clear.

-----

Are you frustrated by police brutality and the forces that target black and brown folk? Are you ready to stand up against oppressive forces? Help us organize en masse and make the City of Detroit and DPD feel the pressure of our demands loud and clear.

Last week, the Board of Police Commissioners discussed the rise of violent crime that Detroit has seen this summer. Underlying the discussion was the assumption that Detroit Police play a role in keeping us safe from violence. But do they really?

We know that DPD promoted the officer who beat Sheldy Smith <[link removed]>. We know that DPD officers have shot three Detroiters this month <[link removed]> alone. We know that DPD have been brutalizing protesters, from driving their SUV into a crowd <[link removed]> to arresting Detroit Will Breathe organizer Nakia Wallace using a choke hold <[link removed]>. And while they claim their surveillance is protecting us, we know that it mostly keeps black Detroiters in a perpetual lineup <[link removed]>, constantly at risk of being accused of a crime.

The Board of Police Commissioners need to address the ways that Detroit Police perpetuate violence and fail to prevent it. We need to continue showing up to their meetings and demanding that they do their part to defund, disarm, and demilitarize the Detroit Police Department in order to rebuild our neighborhoods.
