Hi Friend,
For this #FeelGoodFriday, here’s a heartwarming update from our recent work in Peru.
At Honorio Delgado Hospital in Arequipa, local ophthalmologists spent a week training with Orbis Volunteer Faculty and world‑renowned expert Dr. James Lehmann. Together, they learned advanced cataract techniques that are already transforming lives.
Thanks to this project—and supporters like you—23 patients were screened and 15 received sight‑restoring surgery. Patients like Gravelina, Valentin, Mercedes, and Jesus now have renewed independence and brighter futures. You can read their stories by clicking here >>
Local doctors, including Dr. Carlos Angulo and Dr. Olenka Mercado, gained hands‑on experience using the hospital’s newly donated Phaco machine, supported by step‑by‑step mentorship and dedicated lectures throughout the week. Confidence improved, skills strengthened, and the community's access to improved care grew.
As Dr. Olenka shared, this training means patients no longer need to travel to Lima for care—they can now be treated right at home in Arequipa. Traveling to Lima from Arequipa takes over 16 hours by car, if they had access to a vehicle (over 1,000 kilometers).
A huge thank‑you to everyone involved for helping bring high‑quality eye care closer to those who need it most.
Wishing you all a wonderful Friday and an even better weekend.
Team Orbis
