Hi John, it's Aru.
Last night, I joined Ari Melber on MS Now to talk about how Sunrise is fighting back against ICE’s violent crackdown in my hometown of Minneapolis and why this moment demands all of us step up.
What we are seeing right now is unlike anything most of us have ever seen in our lifetimes. The fear, the heartbreak, the shock, people across the country are feeling it deeply.
After Alex Pretti was killed, I went to the intersection where it happened. I saw ICE officers wrestle people to the ground — dragging one man across the street while another was teargassed. I knelt beside the man who had been tear-gassed, pushing snow on his face to clear his eyes.
I was heartbroken and furious. Yet, in that moment, I felt something powerful: strangers on the street looking out for one another, refusing to back down.
Sunrise has been leading this work here because we know this is an unprecedented moment.
Federal agents are operating in our cities with extraordinary power. However, we know that ICE doesn’t operate alone. They rely on rental car companies, hotels, and businesses in our communities. When everyday people organize and apply pressure, we can cut off that support, and we are already seeing it work.
This is a moment that will define who we are. And together, we can meet it with courage.
