Federal Bill Threatens to Undo Endangered Species Act Protections
Dear John,
The House of Representatives will soon vote on an extreme bill that would weaken protections for wildlife under the Endangered Species Act at a time when more than one million species around the world are at risk of extinction.
The "ESA Amendments Act" (H.R. 1897) would, among other changes, significantly rewrite key portions of the ESA to make it harder for imperiled species to be added to the ESA's list of threatened and endangered species and thereby receive protection under the law. It would also fast-track the process for removing species from the list, weakening the ESA's ability to preserve biodiversity. Finally, the bill would remove guardrails put in place to prevent the federal government from destroying critical habitat of the threatened and endangered species it is charged with protecting.
This legislation undermines science-based wildlife conservation, and instead prioritizes industry profits. If enacted, this bill would likely represent a death warrant for certain imperiled species, denying them the popular and commonsense safeguards that have been in place for decades.
