My term has only just begun, but the past week was a powerful reminder of why I do this work — to honor excellence, invest in the next generation of leaders, and keep fighting for a Virginia that works for everyone. I wanted to share a few highlights with you. |
On Thursday, the Virginia Senate was proud to recognize Marion native William “Billy” Wagner with a center-aisle presentation of Senate Joint Resolution 323.
Over a remarkable 15-year Major League Baseball career — with the Astros, Phillies, Mets, Red Sox, and Braves — Billy built a legacy defined by excellence, perseverance, and leadership. His seven All-Star selections, the 1999 Rolaids Relief Man Award, and his 2025 induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame speak volumes. Moments like this matter — they allow us to celebrate Virginians whose achievements inspire communities across the Commonwealth. |
On Friday, my office was delighted to welcome Fairfax County high school students spending the day at the Capitol.
Through Senator Stella Pekarsky’s High School Leadership Program, these students met with legislators and executive offices to learn firsthand how our government works. Seeing young people so engaged, curious, and eager to participate in our democracy gives me tremendous hope for Virginia’s future. |
I then had the honor of welcoming an outstanding group of Virginia Military Institute cadets for their advocacy day.
Their stories — what brought them to VMI and where they hope to lead next — reflected a deep commitment to service and leadership. These cadets are a powerful example of how institutions like VMI help shape principled leaders ready to serve the Commonwealth and the nation. |
I was also pleased to join the Virginia Health Care for All Coalition for their annual breakfast.
I was able to thank advocates for their tireless work expanding access to care, strengthening state health care funding, and continuing the fight to restore federal support for enhanced Affordable Care Act premium tax credits and Medicaid. Health care is a human right, and this coalition shows what’s possible when people organize with purpose. |
Later that day, I welcomed the Center for Nonprofit Excellence and its members from across the Commonwealth.
Nonprofits are often the backbone of our communities, and I appreciated hearing directly from organizations about the services they provide — and the real challenges they’re facing right now. Their insights help inform the policies we pursue to better support those doing critical work on the ground. |
I then joined the College of William & Mary community — faculty, staff, students, and Board members — for their legislative reception at the Library of Virginia.
I was proud to commend William & Mary on achieving R1 research institution status, a milestone that reflects extraordinary academic leadership and strengthens Virginia’s role as a hub for innovation and discovery.
Thank you for being part of this journey with me. Your support makes it possible to show up, listen, and keep fighting for a Commonwealth rooted in opportunity, dignity, and justice for all. With gratitude,
