John, like you, we’re devastated (and quite honestly pissed off) by the Trump Administration’s violence and brutality in the state of Minnesota.

Alex Pretti and Renee Good should be alive. Children like Liam Ramos should be in preschool, not immigration detention. Those swept off the streets without charges or due process should be at home with their families. No one should have to shelter in place for fear of Trump’s unidentified masked agents.

We’re inspired by everyone supporting their neighbors, whatever way they can, locally in Minneapolis or in their own communities, online and off. Mary Gay is standing up, too. Here’s a quick look at what she’s said and done in these first weeks of 2026. (Is it just me, or have these past few weeks felt like months?)
Mary Gay conducted Congressional oversight of a local BOP facility where ICE detainees are being held, after one of her constituents died in custody. Mary Gay was appalled at the treatment of detainees and used this moment to call out DHS funding and ICE’s unchecked, unregulated, and unconstitutional brutality.

Alongside her fellow Judiciary Committee Democrats, Mary Gay is picking up where the Republicans have been derelict in their duties to the American people. It’s critical that we investigate why Americans were killed in the streets of Minneapolis and hold those responsible to account.

Earlier this month, Mary Gay participated in an oversight hearing alongside Rep. Pramila Jayapal and fellow congressional Democrats to investigate Donald Trump, Stephen Miller, and Kristi Noem’s violent attack on the state of Minnesota and the American people as a whole.

Mary Gay believes that ICE and the Department of Homeland Security should not get a dollar more of taxpayers’ money until we have full transparency into that agency’s actions. She recently voted against more funding for ICE and raised dire concerns about detainee deaths in ICE facilities. Mary Gay has called on Pennsylvania Senators John Fetterman and Dave McCormick to vote NO on ICE funding.
“More than 30 people have died in DHS custody over the last year, [including] one of my constituents.
He developed a medical issue and, by all reports other than the DHS official report, was denied medical care that might have saved his life.
I cannot support a bill giving funds to DHS that doesn't rein in masked ICE agents who are terrorizing our communities, tear-gassing babies, going door to door, raiding homes without a warrant, and holding American citizens, even children, at gunpoint.

While we have our eyes on the situation in Minneapolis, there’s another critical issue that Mary Gay is working on: home heating! Mary Gay is working to increase funding for LIHEAP, the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, to keep folks warm for the winter. Cold can be a matter of life and death — Mary Gay is fighting for more resources to keep everyone safe and warm.
