Donald Trump is attacking the very pillars of American democracy that have long made this country a safe home for our community and so many others: That the law applies equally to us all. That we are free to speak our minds. That nobody should fear our own government.

With escalating force, President Trump and Attorney General Pam Bondi have weaponized the Justice Department to pursue a self-interested, corrupt political agenda – at the expense of our democratic freedoms (and the important work the FBI and others should be doing).

They’ve pursued meritless prosecutions against political foes while their allies and donors get pardons and passes. They’ve used government power to raid election offices and bend law firms, media outlets and universities to the president’s will.

This is authoritarianism 101. As Jewish Americans, we are deeply and darkly concerned about where this goes. Our history and our values compel us to take action.

This pro-democracy legislation – championed by J Street leaders Senator Chris Murphy and Congressman Jason Crow – gives Americans real legal tools to defend their rights when politically targeted, and to hold officials directly accountable for abuses of power.

Our community has been thrust to the front lines of this fight this year.

Antisemitism has been cynically invoked as a pretext to justify crackdowns on immigrants, student protesters and universities – fracturing the liberal democratic protections and higher-education institutions that have allowed our community to thrive.

Meanwhile, many of those fueling toxic antisemitism and other poisonous ideologies on the right – from Elon Musk to Nick Fuentes to Andrew Tate – have been excused, rewarded and elevated by this very same administration. At the same time, we’re seeing fringe left-wing protesters cross the line of what’s acceptable and poison the just cause for Palestinians’ freedom by inciting violence against Jews worldwide. All of this, of course, fuels the Trump Administration’s fire to crack down on Americans’ freedoms.

But we are anything but powerless.

America has survived McCarthyism, political repression and even civil war – and we have emerged stronger because people stood up to fight for American values and reinforce the guardrails of our democracy.
