Jack,
February is Black History Month. As we celebrate this month, I’m proud to stand with Black New Mexicans and take in pride in all the ways in which they have shaped our society. From enduring impacts on music and culture to the high rate of service in our armed forces, Black Americans built this nation in the face of systematic oppression and discrimination.
Black history is also Black joy. Throughout the month, I encourage New Mexicans to celebrate by supporting Black-owned businesses and attending local events, performances, and community gatherings that uplift Black voices and stories here at home.
Our Black communities continue to struggle with an uneven playing field and institutional roadblocks to opportunity. Police violence, mass incarceration, and gerrymandering designed to suppress marginalized communities and their votes are just a few examples of how our society saddles Black Americans with uniquely unfair obstacles.
This Black History Month, we recommit ourselves to recognizing and combating racism and discrimination in all forms. From fighting white nationalism to voting rights, I will always be on the side of justice in our nation’s struggle for racial equity.
In solidarity,
Maggie
