Since 2010, the International Day of the Endangered Lawyer has turned the world’s attention to nations where the rule of law is in peril, and judges and lawyers are under attack. For 2026, the global coalition has designated the United States as the focus country. Our panelists will explore the systemic challenges that led to this designation — from executive orders targeting law firms and the revocation of security clearances to the rising tide of harassment against attorneys and judges to the attacks on nonprofit organizations that provide legal services and advocacy.
When lawyers are targeted for representing marginalized clients or the pro bono cases they take, the entire justice system begins to crumble. The discussion will also examine why international bar associations believe the U.S. now mirrors patterns of authoritarianism previously seen in other focus countries and what steps the legal community can take to safeguard judicial independence and the right to counsel.
