I'm starting this month the same way I’ve been trying to start each day lately, John — by remembering what I'm grateful for.
I’m grateful for this incredible community of supporters who refuse to give up, even when things are heavy. And I’m deeply grateful for the more than 50,000 grassroots donors who have stood with JanePAC, giving what they could as we work to elect brave leaders across the country who will stand up to Trump’s cruelty and lead with people like you at the center of their hearts and their policies.
But today, I'm not writing to ask for money. I'm writing because I genuinely want to check in and see how you’re taking care of yourself right now.
This is one of those moments when it feels like every time we try to move forward, something deeply personal or terrifying finds us. Trump’s authoritarian agenda is accelerating. Communities are under attack. Freedoms are being stripped away. If you’re feeling angry, anxious, or overwhelmed — you’re not alone. I feel it too.
I'm 88, and this is the most frightening period I've lived through. But one thing I’ve learned over time is that we can’t keep giving if we’re completely drained. If we’re going to stay in this fight for the long haul, we have to take care of ourselves along the way.
For me, that means staying physically active. I still do my workouts every single day because it keeps me grounded. It also means staying engaged through my free speech initiative my father started during the McCarthy era that we brought back last year — where we're training people to defend our constitutional rights, and that gives me hope.
But your self-care might look completely different than mine, and that’s okay. There’s no right or wrong way to get through moments like this.
If you have a few minutes, I'd really love to hear from you. Will you share what you're doing to take care of yourself right now? Every response I read reminds me that we're not alone in this, and that means everything.
Thank you for being here.
xx Jane
