LifeLink Meeting brings hope, leadership,
and a shared vision for Life
Bernadette Smyth with Bishop Kevin Doran and Peadar Tóibín TD, leader of Aontú
Hi John,
Stanton Healthcare Belfast joined with pro-life representatives from across Ireland in Monaghan on Saturday for a special LIFELINK meeting, an important and timely event focused on strengthening pregnancy support and building a new, coordinated response to the needs of women facing unexpected pregnancies.
Held at the Four Seasons Hotel, the meeting created space for meaningful dialogue, collaboration, and forward planning at a moment when the need for compassionate, life-affirming support has never been greater. The attendance of Bishop Kevin Doran, Bishop of Achonry and Elphin, gave a clear signal of the seriousness and moral weight of the discussions, while the presence of Peadar Tóibín TD, leader of Aontú, highlighted the importance of having political leadership in Ireland that is willing to speak clearly and consistently in favour of life and of practical alternatives to abortion.
At the heart of the meeting was a powerful and inspiring address by Bernadette Smyth, who shared both the story of Stanton’s work to date and a compelling vision for the future of pregnancy support in Ireland.
Drawing on the experience of Stanton Healthcare Belfast, Bernadette spoke about the effectiveness of professional, compassionate care that meets women where they are and responds to their real needs. She outlined plans for a nationwide support network that would connect women facing unexpected pregnancies with immediate, life-affirming assistance, ensuring that no woman feels alone or without options.
Central to this vision is the establishment of a national call centre, modelled on Option Line, operated by Stanton’s affiliate Heartbeat International in the United States. Such a service would offer women advice, encouragement, and referrals to pregnancy care centres across Ireland, creating a clear and accessible first point of contact for those in crisis.
Bernadette also highlighted the importance of training and professional standards. Stanton Healthcare continues to invest in equipping pregnancy advocates and sonographers, with the skills needed to serve women with excellence and integrity. She shared the encouraging news that four additional sonographers have recently completed training, strengthening the capacity of pregnancy care centres to provide high-quality medical support.
Throughout her address, Bernadette returned to the need for unity and shared purpose. This initiative, she explained, seeks to bring pro-life organisations together around a common goal: offering women hope, compassion, and real choices that affirm life. The long-term aim is nothing less than a cultural shift, one in which pregnancy care centres become the first place women turn, and where places of fear and despair are replaced with places of dignity and respect.
“We are on the cusp of something transformative,” Bernadette said. “Imagine an Ireland where every woman, no matter her circumstances, has access to life-affirming support ...where abortion is not seen as a solution, but as unthinkable.”
She closed by reminding attendees that such a vision will only become reality if people stand together, echoing St. Mother Teresa’s words: “What I can’t do, you can, and together we can do great things.”
The LifeLink Meeting was a clear reminder that the work of supporting women and defending life is both urgent and hopeful - and that, through leadership, collaboration, and commitment, great things are already underway.
