Executive Branch Updates: Visa Freeze Litigation, HUD Proposed Rule Comments

The biggest news this week was that a coalition of legal groups including the National Immigration Law Center, The Legal Aid Society, and the Western Center on Law & Poverty filed a suit challenging the State Department's 75 country immigrant visa halt.  They filed on behalf of CLINIC, African Communities Together and many brave U.S. citizens whose family members are harmed by the policy. See State Department (Other) for more details and links to primary sources.

HUD has a proposed rule out for comment that would remove its "disparate impact" standards from regulations. If finalized, this would leave it to courts to determine whether a given practice has an unjustified discriminatory effect under the Fair Housing Act. Comments are due by February 13. Our partners at the National Low Income Housing Coalition have a toolkit for responding, including links to a template comment and a petition.  We are also watching out for the HUD "mixed families" rule which cleared OMB review last week.

Updated Materials: Kids and Benefits Toolkit

Many mixed-status families are unaware that some of their family members may be eligible for supportive benefits programs such as Medicaid, SNAP, and subsidized housing. We’ve updated our Kids and Benefits resources toolkit on our website to provide educational materials to guide families to access the programs for which they might be eligible and can be adapted to your use. Get the toolkit via the link below.

Congress: DHS Funding Resources

Congress has allocated funding for the Department of Homeland Security through February 13th and is currently deciding whether to provide additional funds. To provide more information and help the community speak out, the National Immigration Law Center and partner organizations have created talking points and an online form to send a message to members of Congress encouraging them to reject additional funding and pass policies to keep families and communities safe. Get the talking points and take-action form via the links below.
