This week, the administration executed an all-out attack on our First Amendment when Trump’s Justice Department wrongfully arrested independent journalists Don Lemon and Georgia Fort for reporting on an anti-ICE protest in a St. Paul church.
It was no fluke that Pam Bondi targeted Black reporters on the eve of Black History Month. This administration knows what it’s doing.
As a Black woman journalist, I know how Black voices are silenced and how essential a free press is for telling history as it actually happened. We must protect the rights of journalists like me, Don Lemon, and Georgia Fort to report on the news without fear of retaliation.
“Democracy dies in darkness,” and Trump must be reminded that in this democracy, freedom of the press is sacrosanct.
Don Lemon and Georgia Fort can be proud of their First Amendment resistance. But Congress cannot. That’s why fighting for the First Amendment is a cornerstone of my platform. Our leaders need to stop sitting on their hands and DO SOMETHING. For the people. For democracy.
Stand with me and help me get to Washington so I can DO SOMETHING. I know how critical a free press is for the health of our democracy — and I’m willing to fight for it.
