Friend,
Today, Maryland said NO to agreements between ICE and Maryland law enforcement. We will no longer allow our local and state law enforcement to aid and abet the terror ICE is inflicting on communities across our state. In a huge victory for immigrant justice, the Maryland House and Senate passed legislation to ban 287(g) agreements in our state. Governor Moore is expected to sign the bill into law, putting an end to cooperative agreements with ICE in Maryland.
This is an enormous victory, won thanks to immigrant rights organizations like CASA’s incredible leadership and Marylanders, including thousands of you from all over the state taking action. Our legislators heard loud and clear that protecting our immigrant communities from ICE is a top priority, and have acted accordingly.
But the work to protect Marylanders from ICE terror is far from over. ICE can, and will still show up in our communities.
Just over a month into 2026, ICE has murdered 9 people that we know of: Keith Porter, Luis Gustavo Núñez Cáceres, Geraldo Lunas Campos, Víctor Manuel Díaz, Parady La, Renee Nicole Good, Luis Beltrán Yáñez–Cruz, Heber Sánchez Domínguez, and Alex Pretti. Sadly, others have died in detention centers while suffering under deplorable conditions.
It is clear that ICE’s lawless campaign to tear families apart is only ramping up, and we have to be committed for the long haul. There is still important immigrant justice legislation being considered in Annapolis (stay tuned for updates) along with continuing to push back against the proposed ICE warehouse detention center outside of Hagerstown. We must all continue to do what we can to protect our neighbors from ICE at the local and state level.
We will continue to be in touch with tangible ways to take action to protect immigrant Marylanders!
Thanks for all you do,
The Advance Maryland team
